Hurricane Dangers: Flooding
Flooding is the single biggest danger that Alamance County residents will usually face from a hurricane. In fact, in the past 30 years, more people have died from inland flooding than from any other factor in hurricanes. Interestingly, flooding is not dependent upon the wind speeds of a storm. Flooding from Tropical Storm Allison (2001) killed 41 people, mostly when Allison was a Tropical Depression, and most of that flooding occured inland, away from the coast.

North Carolina has a history of flooding from Hurricanes. Diane in 1955 and more recently, Floyd in 1999 both produced large amounts of flooding.
In 1999, Hurricane Floyd killed 56 people. Of those, 50 were killed due to inland flooding.
As a simple rule: be very aware of your surroundings during a hurricane, especially if you live in a flood-prone area. | Do not drive across flooded roads. Pay attention to evacuation orders and street closings.
