"How much do services cost at the Health Department?"
Some of our services are free. Charges for other services are based on income and the number of people living in your household. We also accept Medicaid and are able to file some private insurance.
"What do I have to do if I want to get birth control?"
A complete exam will be done at the Health Department before you are given any method of birth control (except condoms). The exam includes: discussing important medical history, a pap smear, a clinical breast exam, and any other test needed to be sure you are healthy and can use the birth control you want. Emergency contraception, which can reduce the risk of pregnancy after unprotected sex, is available for established patients for use in an emergency.
"How long is the wait to get an appointment for the exam I need?"
The waiting time to get an exam varies, but is usually 2-6 weeks. Most services are by appointment only, however some services are available on a walk-in basis at designated times. Please call 570-6459 or 227-0101 to ask about these special clinics. In the mean time, condoms can be picked up free at the front desk Monday through Friday without an appointment.
"Do my parents have to know if I get birth control?"
No. Services at the Health Department are confidential. However, we do encourage teenagers to discuss their use of birth control with their parents or another responsible adult.
"If I prefer, can I be examined by a woman?"
Yes.
"Can I get a sports physical, employment physical, or medical care when I am sick?"
The Women's Health Clinic focuses on well woman and reproductive health care. For other types of medical care, including sports and employment physicals or sick care, our patients need to see a doctor outside of the health department.
"Have other questions?"
