METHANE GAS WELLS

Methane is the gas produced by decomposition of waste and must be
monitored at landfills on a quarterly basis.

It is important to monitor methane gas at landfills because it can be explosive
at 5% - 15% in air by volume. Concentrations above 15% will burn but not explode.

At the landfill, eight wells are strategically placed around the perimeter of the municipal
solid waste disposal cell. These eight wells are monitored quarterly by the Alamance
County Fire Marshal's Office.
