SCRAP TIRE DISPOSAL PROGRAM
The Alamance County Landfill receives approximately 180,000 tires (1,800 tons) per year.
Tire disposal at the landfill is partially funded by grants provided through the NC State Scrap Tire Program.
When tires are sold, a disposal tax of 2% for passenger tires and 1% for truck or off-road tires is collected by the tire dealers. These taxes are sent to the State Dept. of Revenue on a monthly or quarterly basis. The State Dept. of Revenue keeps a portion of the scrap tire tax revenue for administrative fees and tire cleanups. The remainder is dispersed to NC counties on a per capita basis. Approximately $1.7 million annually is returned to NC counties through the Scrap Tire Grant Program.
In order for tire generators to dispose of tires at no charge, the landfill requires them to show that the disposal fee has been collected and sent to the State. Copies of their E-500G scrap tire tax forms must be sent to the landfill administration before tires can be brought for disposal.
Any ineligible tires (retail without documentation or rimmed tires) are charged at $76.56 per ton. This amount is based on the fee charged by the tire contractor for recycling and disposal of tires from the landfill. Alamance County spent approximately $198,000 in the past year for disposal and recycling of scrap tires.
There is no charge to citizens who bring five or less tires off the rims.
