YARD WASTE/ MULCH

The fee for yard waste disposal is $19 per ton.

A yard waste recycling program for brush, leaves, and grass clippings was
established at the Alamance County Landfill in 1991. Yard waste is brought
to the landfill by citizens, municipalities and landscapers.

Approximately 5,000 tons of yard waste is collected and processed each year.
Twice a year the landfill contracts a grinding operator to shred the yard waste
into ground mulch using a tub grinder.

Some of the mulch is used for vehicular access at the landfill in lieu of gravel.
The remainder is set aside to compost. The yard waste is decomposed about 50%,
is less than 3" in size and becomes a dark colored mulch.

After composting, the remaining mulch is sold to the public.
