On January 2, 1980 the Alamance County Recreation and Parks Department and the Alamance County Board of Education entered into an agreement that allowed the ACRPD to lease the school system properties including the Eli Whitney and Pleasant Grove Recreation Centers. These centers were to be utilized to help meet the recreational and leisure needs of the citizens of Alamance County. The first terms of the leases for Eli Whitney and Pleasant Grove Recreation Centers were for 25 years. The agreed upon price for the ACRPD to use the properties was $1.00 per year. The Pleasant Grove and Eli Whitney properties are currently leased to the ACRPD until 2007.
The Eli Whitney and Pleasant Grove Recreation facilities play a vital role in the Alamance County Recreation and Parks Department’s mission of providing excellent leisure services designed to enhance the quality of life for County residents. Both of these recreation centers provide the ACRPD with a means of offering unique community-based recreation programs. Athletic events, special activities, senior citizen programs and more are available through each location.
The Eli Whitney Recreation Center is located at 4110 E. Greensboro-Chapel Hill Rd. off Highway 87 south of Graham. The entire property is situated on 10.86 acres. The facility includes a full size gymnasium of approximately 8,073 square feet and a locker room/boiler area of 2,829 square feet. Outdoor facilities include a lighted baseball/softball field, an unlit practice field for baseball or softball, a walking track, and playground apparatus.
Pleasant Grove Recreation Center is located at 3958 N NC hwy 49, north of Haw River. The entire property measures 28 acres. The facility includes a full size gymnasium and various classrooms that measure approximately 16,652 square feet. Outdoor facilities include a lighted baseball/softball field, an unlit practice field for baseball or softball, a walking track, and playground apparatus.
Pleasant Grove Recreation Center and Eli Whitney Recreation Center are supervised directly by a Center Manager. The Center Managers’ duties include supervising and directing activities at the center, maintaining the building and grounds, and cleaning, repairing and inventorying all equipment. Each Center Manager is also responsible for a number of part-time personnel that assist with the center operations.
