In the Spring of 2008, Alamance County was awarded a Brownfields Assessment Grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the amount of $95,000 to conduct Phase I and Phase II environmental assessments. The intent of this project is to identify any contamination existing on the site, prepare a plan of remediation and to identify opportunities for redevelopment of the site.
A Phase I Environmental Assessment includes the following tasks:
• Property Overview-location, size, features, surrounding land use
• Property History-ownership, past operations, regulatory history,waste disposal/storage
• Physical survey of property-verify info from record reviews, interview people knowledgeable about site, assess potential Phase II sampling areas
A Phase II Environmental Assessment is more specific in nature and may include the following:
• Soil Sampling
• Groundwater Sampling
• Surface Water Sampling
