History of the Site

The Historic Bellemont Mill rests on a 4.2 acre tract of land located off of Hwy NC 49 in Alamance County, North Carolina and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Bellemont Mill was built in 1879 by L. Banks Holt and Lawrence S. Holt, sons of North Carolina textile pioneer Edwin M. Holt. The brothers ran the mill together until 1897, when L. Banks Holt purchased his brother’s partnership share.  L. Banks Holt operated all of his mills in the area as proprietorships until 1909 when he established the L. Banks Holt Manufacturing Company. The Bellemont Mill remained a part of the company until 1933 when E.M. Holt Plaid Mill, Inc. purchased the mill and converted it to rayon manufacture.  The mill was sold to Burlington Milling Company in 1939 and was renamed Bellemont Weaving.  In 1958, Hazel Knitting Mill, Inc. purchased the mill, leasing it to William S. Foster, son of one of the owners, in 1973.  William S. Foster renamed the mill Flexon Fabric, Inc. and manufactured polyester fabric there until 1981.  Tasker Industries of Greensboro, North Carolina purchased the mill in 1981.

It is suspected that the site is contaminated by a mixture of petroleum and hazardous substances typically in use during textile manufacturing, such as asbestos, mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls

(PCBs), lead, other metals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs).
