What is GIS?

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a system that pulls information in about where things are with information about what those things are like. Unlike with a paper map, where “what you see is what you get,” a GIS map can combine many layers of information stored in a database, with one layer containing information about properties, another about water features, another about streets, etc.
