First doses of H1N1 vaccine arrive, seasonal vaccine to go to high-risk groups

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 7, 2009

BURLINGTON - The Alamance County Health Department (ACHD) received its first allocation of H1N1 vaccine on Monday.  ACHD’s initial 200 doses, in the form of a nasal spray, are designated for clinic providers with direct patient contact at the health department and EMS personnel.  As more shipments of H1N1 vaccine are received by the health department from the N.C. Immunization Branch, vaccination efforts will expand to target groups in the general public, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  These additional allocations, which are anticipated to arrive in the coming weeks, will include vials and pre-filled syringes of the H1N1 vaccine.

In addition to preparations surrounding the administration of the H1N1 vaccine, seasonal influenza vaccination has resumed.  ACHD currently has a supply of seasonal vaccine and will be administering these doses on a walk-in basis, Monday-Friday, at the following times:

• 8:30 A.M. – 11:00 A.M.
• 1:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M.

Vaccine will be given to the following high-risk groups:

• Adults over the age of 65
• Children 5 years old and younger
• Any individual with an underlying medical condition (i.e. COPD,  asthma, diabetes)

The cost for the seasonal vaccine is $25.00.  Individuals interested may wish to call the health department at (336) 227-0101 and speak with a nurse to verify high-risk eligibility.
