Join us for Backpacking Basics!

October 3 & 24, 9:30-11am • Overnight Trip, November 14-15

This program is for anyone seeking to backpack for the first time or with limited experience. If you love the outdoors, this series of classes is for you!

In our first class, we’ll meet at Shelter 3 at Cedarock Park. We’ll cover all the necessities to backpacking from safety, food, and shelter to what gear you may need and how to do it without breaking the bank. There will be plenty of room to social distance from one another under the shelter. There will be a 3-week break between classes to allow participants to find/purchase any needed gear or supplies. Participants can also reach out to the instructor during this time for any questions or advice.

Our second class will consist of bringing in our packed bags, assessing and weighing them, and testing them on a short hike through our park. Participants will receive feedback on their packs and gear in a collaborative atmosphere. This will allow everyone to troubleshoot problems or comfort issues with their gear.

After our two classes, participants will get to experience the highlight of the program, an overnight trip in Alamance County. The overnight trip will be on November 14-15. We will hike 3.1 miles from Glencoe Paddle Access to Sellar’s Falls. We’ll set up camp, make dinner, and enjoy a night under the stars. The next morning, we’ll make breakfast and hike out 1.5 miles to Red Slide Park. This is a great opportunity to experience backcountry camping with other people in a safe environment.

This will be a COVID friendly event. We will abide by the governor’s orders and maintain social distancing with plenty of outdoor space for each other. As regulations change, we will adapt as necessary.
