On Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Alamance County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Old Ski Lodge on 2611 Old NC 87 Highway in reference to a disturbance in which a subject was armed with a firearm.

When the first deputy arrived, a male was standing on the back of a truck waving a pistol. The suspect pointed the firearm and discharged his weapon. The deputy then returned fire, however, the suspect nor the deputy sustained any injuries at that time. Officers from the Elon and Gibsonville Police Departments assisted deputies with taking the male into custody. He was then transported to Alamance Regional Medical Center for an evaluation and released shortly thereafter. The shooter was identified as William Broadie Childress.

Mr. Childress was charged with a Felony for Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill and a Felony Assault on a Government Official. He was taken to the Alamance County Detention Center and received a $75,000 secured bond.
