On Monday, July 24, 2023 at 3:43 a.m., Deputies conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Sandy Cross Rd. and Haw River Hopedale Rd. north of Burlington, N.C. The black Toyota Camry was stopped for an equipment violation, defective taillights.
During the stop, Deputies detected a strong odor of what was believed to be marijuana from the vehicle. The driver, Jimmy Walter Aguilar Zavala, was found to have been smoking marijuana. A K9 on scene indicated a positive alert during an open-air sniff.
Deputies conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle where baggies of marijuana along with a larger quantity of marijuana were located in a back pack. A digital scale was found in the center console. Deputies also learned that Mr. Zavala was driving a vehicle while his license was suspended.
Mr. Zavala was arrested and transported to the Alamance County Detention Center.
