Great Alamance Creek Trail Feasibility Study

Why Conduct a Feasibility Study?

Central Pines Regional Council, along with Alamance County, applied and was awarded grant funding from the Economic Development Administration to conduct this feasibility study. The study’s goal is to assess the feasibility and analyze economic impacts of creating land trails and enhancing paddle trails along the Great Alamance Creek corridor in Alamance County.

The study focuses on an approximately 8-mile stretch from the Village of Alamance to the Town of Swepsonville, where Great Alamance Creek flows into the Haw River and joins the Haw River State Trail. This study will help create a connection to the Haw River State Trail and provide guidance to Alamance County and local municipalities seeking to leverage Great Alamance Creek and the Haw River as economic development tools.

Study Process
Alamance County is working with Central Pines Regional Council and a consultant, Alta Planning + Design, to conduct this study. The study is guided by a Steering Committee made up of representatives from local governments, nonprofits, the business community, and outdoor interest groups. It also draws on public and stakeholder input, analysis of existing conditions along the corridor, and recommendations from previous planning efforts.

Upon completion of this planning process, trail development beyond existing public lands and easements will only be pursued in partnership with voluntary landowners.
